The Leelanau Sheriff Corrections page documents the boarding rule. Formal local records follow the county FOIA procedures, while the official criminal-records launcher identifies the court path that explains the sentence.
Leelanau Boarding Release Authority
The Leelanau jail says a boarded inmate receives an outdate from the inmate's county and remains subject to that county's release rules. Physical location does not transfer the sentence to Leelanau. A Leelanau booking entry may document confinement and departure, while another county's judgment, good-time rule, and release calculation control the outcome. That split is the key to every boarding search.
Start by asking which county sentenced the person, which agency booked the person, and which facility supplied the bed. Then ask whether the departure was return transport, transfer to another agency, or actual community release. Do not apply Leelanau's 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. local outdate policy to a boarded person unless Jail Control confirms that it governs.
| Question | Likely record holder |
|---|---|
| Where was the person physically held? | The custodial jail |
| Who imposed the sentence? | The sentencing court |
| Who calculated the outdate? | The sentencing or boarding county identified by staff |
| Where did the person go? | The sending jail and receiving agency |
| When did community release occur? | The facility that made the final community release |
Confirm a Leelanau Transfer
No single statewide county-jail locator resolves every boarding move. The correct path follows the chain of custody. Jail Control can confirm whether the person left the Leelanau building and may identify a receiving agency when public. The sentencing court supplies the legal authority. The receiving jail then confirms its own admission and later release.
- Call Leelanau Jail Control at 231-256-8661 and ask whether the person was locally sentenced or boarded.
- Request the departure date, type, and receiving county or agency if available.
- Open the sentencing court docket and identify the judgment, county, and case number.
- Contact the receiving county sheriff using its official website and records channel.
- Compare the two facilities' admission and departure times to avoid mistaking transport time for release time.
- If the receiving source is MDOC, BOP, or ICE, switch to that system's locator.
Boarding Release Record Fields
A useful request seeks more than a yes-or-no answer. Ask the Leelanau record for booking identity, admission time, departure time, release or transfer code, transporting agency, receiving facility, charges, sentencing county, and local booking number. Ask the controlling county for its sentence calculation, time-served credit, credits or forfeitures, holds, and final release type. Public availability can vary, but precise fields help the custodian locate the right records.
- Boarding county
- The county whose person is confined elsewhere and whose rules may control release.
- Custodial county
- The county that supplies the jail bed and physical custody record.
- Sentencing authority
- The court or jurisdiction whose judgment governs the sentence.
- Transfer
- A physical departure followed by another agency's custody.
- Community release
- Departure without an immediate custodial transfer, though supervision may continue.
A bare roster absence does not state which event happened. The Leelanau County release record path gives the local records-request route when online custody information is absent.
Leelanau and County Contacts
Leelanau Jail Control is the anchor for a stay in Suttons Bay. Formal Leelanau records requests go to the county FOIA coordinator. For another county, use that county sheriff's official corrections or records page. No set list of boarding jails was verified, so naming a specific destination without a person-level record would be unsupported.

A receiving county's address, phone, office hours, request form, and fees must come from that county. Do not send another sheriff's records request to Leelanau merely because the underlying case began there.
County Release Rules Differ
Michigan's MCL 51.282 supplies a county-jail good-time framework, but the operational calculation still belongs to the proper jail and sentencing authority. Leelanau describes one day for each six days and may forfeit credit for rule violations. Another county may publish different procedures, release hours, debt policies, or record access. The fact that a person slept in Leelanau does not make every Leelanau policy applicable.
Sentence structure also matters. Credit for time served, concurrent or consecutive terms, multiple open cases, warrants, and holds can change the result. A court docket explains the judgment, while the jail calculates and executes the outdate. Ask both sources when a projected date conflicts with a physical release.
Transfers to Michigan Prisons
A circuit commitment can send a person from county custody to MDOC. Once intake occurs, OTIS is the public state search. A prison status means confinement continued. Later, Date Paroled can show prison departure into supervision, while Discharge Date marks the end of MDOC jurisdiction. Neither should be substituted for the earlier county transfer date.
OTIS excludes jail-only cases and recent county releases. If the name does not appear, confirm that the judgment actually committed the person to MDOC and allow for intake processing. Use the circuit court file and Leelanau departure record as the bridge between systems. A precise chain might read: county booking, circuit commitment, Leelanau transport, MDOC admission, parole, then discharge.
Federal and Tribal Transfers
A local departure can also lead to federal or tribal authority. BOP covers federal prisoners after Bureau intake, not every pretrial USMS placement. ICE ODLS may cover current detainees and people released from ICE custody within 60 days. Neither system proves what happened at the Leelanau jail. Use the county record for departure and the federal system for later status.
Grand Traverse Band matters may combine a Tribal Court order with county confinement. No separate tribal jail in Leelanau County was verified. A Band-related person held by the county may leave through a tribal court decision, a county transport, or another lawful path. Reconcile Tribal Court and Jail Control rather than searching for an invented tribal roster.
When Transfer Records Conflict
Dates may describe different milestones rather than a true conflict. The sending jail records physical departure. The receiving jail records admission, which may fall later after transport. A court order may be entered before staff complete checkout. VINE may transmit a change after the underlying event. Label each timestamp before comparing it.
If one county says “released” and another shows a new booking, describe the chain as a transfer unless the records establish a period in the community. Ask for the release disposition or destination code. For older events, request retained records because public rosters may no longer show the person. The safe conclusion from a search miss is limited: the person was not found in that public system at that time.
Leelanau Transfer Request Details
Michigan FOIA requires a request to describe existing records. It does not require a sheriff to create a new multi-county release report. A useful Leelanau request identifies the full name, approximate booking range, and booking number if known. It asks for the admission entry, departure timestamp, release or transfer code, public destination, transporting agency, holds, sentencing county, and outdate information retained in the file.
The county generally must issue a grant, denial, partial grant, or extension notice within five business days after legal receipt. One written extension of up to ten business days is allowed. That is a decision deadline rather than a promise that every record will be produced by then. Permitted costs can include actual labor, copies, and mailing. A narrow date range and request for electronic copies can reduce the work.
Send a separate request to the receiving county for its admission and later departure records. Match the identity and case number before joining the entries. A small gap between the sending and receiving timestamps may be transport time. A large or unexplained gap requires clarification rather than an assumption that the person was in the community.
Boarding Outdate Verification
Ask the controlling county whether the outdate includes court-awarded jail credit, statutory good time, disciplinary loss, and every open charge. Leelanau staff can describe the local stay, but another court's judgment remains with its own custodian. The sentencing county's calculation and the final releasing jail's timestamp answer different parts of the record.
VINE can help only when the live system lists the person and reporting agency. A transfer notice directs the search to the recipient. It does not establish later community release. For an older event, the sender's release entry, recipient's admission record, and court judgment form the durable three-source chain.
