Find Federal Prison Releases

To find someone released from a Federal Bureau of Prisons institution, search the national BOP locator and read its federal status narrowly. No federal prison was identified in Leelanau County. A person tied to Leelanau may enter the federal system after local or contracted detention, and may leave BOP while another agency or federal supervision remains involved. A BOP release date answers only the Bureau's custody question. County jail records, the federal docket, and the actual holding facility may be needed to reconstruct the full path.

The BOP locator supplies the Bureau status, the USMS prisoner-operations source explains contracted pre-sentence custody, and ICE detention resources identify the separate immigration path. Each official system answers only its own custody question.

Federal Release Meaning in Leelanau

A person leaving the Leelanau County Correctional Facility for federal authority has been transferred, not released to the community. The U.S. Marshals Service may use state, local, private, or BOP facilities for pre-sentence detention. It does not offer a public historical release locator like BOP. Identify the actual holding facility and federal court docket during that phase.

After BOP intake, the national locator becomes the correct public tool. A result marked “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” means only that BOP no longer holds the person. Another federal, state, county, or immigration agency may have custody. Federal supervised release may also continue after prison departure. Never translate the phrase into “free of all custody or supervision.”

Search BOP Release Records

The official BOP inmate locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. Search by BOP Register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number when known. A name search uses first, middle, and last name, with optional race, age, and sex filters. Compare the register number and descriptors carefully when names are common.

  1. Choose number search for the clearest identity match, or use the name tab.
  2. Enter the available number or full name and narrow only with known facts.
  3. Open the matching result and record the register number.
  4. Read the release date and location/status exactly as displayed.
  5. Check the federal docket when the date or status needs case context.
  6. Check another agency if the result says BOP custody ended but a transfer is possible.

Federal Bureau of Prisons locator release fields for a Leelanau County inquiry

The interface shows why register number, release date, and location or status must be read as BOP fields, not as a county jail record.

BOP Released Result Fields

Public BOP results can show name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location or status. Those fields are narrower than a full correctional file. They do not state every transport, detainer, court condition, or term of supervised release. The federal docket provides the sentence and later court actions. The relevant probation office, when identified in the docket, handles supervision information.

Register number
The BOP identifier and best key for distinguishing similar names.
Release date
The Bureau's reported date, subject to correction and recalculation.
Not in BOP Custody
A statement about BOP only, not all government custody.
Supervised release
Court-ordered federal supervision that can follow prison.
BOP status is jurisdiction-specific. “Released” does not rule out another agency's custody or ongoing federal supervised release.

Federal Release Date Changes

BOP warns that First Step Act recalculations can make a displayed release date temporarily outdated. Sentence credits, court amendments, and administrative processing can also change a projected date. A displayed future date should be called the BOP date as of the search, not a guaranteed departure appointment.

For an actual past release, compare the locator with the docket and, when needed, request the relevant record from the proper federal custodian. The county's local outdate and Sheriff's good-time rules do not apply to a federal sentence. Likewise, Michigan's MDOC Earliest Release Date and Maximum Discharge Date are state terms, not BOP fields.

Leelanau to Federal Custody

Leelanau corrections staff perform transports to other jurisdictions, but research found no federal prison in the county and no basis to treat federal detention as a routine local release path. If Jail Control confirms a federal pickup, ask which agency received the person and where the person was taken. A USMS transfer may lead to a contract jail before BOP appears.

The Leelanau County release record process can document the local departure. It cannot substitute for the later federal record. Build the chronology with the Leelanau release or transfer entry, the federal docket, the actual detention facility, and then BOP.

USMS Has No Release Archive

The Marshals Service manages prisoners and contracts for detention, but it does not own and operate prisons in the same way as BOP. Its public material does not provide a comparable historical locator. A negative BOP search during a federal pretrial case may simply mean the person has not entered BOP custody.

Use the federal court docket to identify detention orders, sentencing, and commitment. Then identify the actual jail. Contact that facility for physical custody and release records. If the person later serves a BOP sentence, the register number links the national locator result to the case. This sequence prevents a false claim that a pretrial detainee was released merely because BOP showed no match.

Federal and ICE Boundaries

BOP and ICE are separate federal systems. BOP handles federal criminal imprisonment. ICE detention is civil immigration custody and uses ODLS, not the BOP locator. A person may leave one system for the other. If an immigration detainer caused a Leelanau departure, the county checkout was a transfer even if BOP has no record.

ICE released-person results have a 60-day scope, while BOP covers federal inmates from 1982 forward. Search the locator that matches the receiving authority. If both return no result, the correct conclusion is limited to those databases. It does not prove that no federal detention or release occurred.

Older Federal Release Research

BOP's 1982 start date leaves earlier federal confinement outside the online locator's stated coverage. For older events, use the federal court archive and request records from the appropriate custodian. A name-only search may also fail because of spelling, aliases, or incomplete identifiers. The register number remains the strongest key.

For any period in a county contract jail, request records from that jail as well. The court sentence may identify legal authority, yet the facility record supplies physical admission and departure. Each timestamp should be labeled. Release from a contract bed, BOP release, and completion of supervised release are different milestones.

Leelanau Federal Record Chain

A federal chronology can cross several custodians. Begin with the Leelanau booking entry if local confinement occurred. The county departure field may identify USMS or another federal recipient. The federal docket then supplies detention orders, plea and sentencing entries, and commitment authority. A contract jail supplies its own physical custody dates. BOP appears after Bureau intake and supplies the national locator status.

The order matters because a search conducted too early can be misleading. A pre-sentence prisoner managed by USMS may not yet have a BOP locator entry. A person whose county booking ended can still be confined in another local or private facility under federal authority. Only after BOP intake does the Bureau locator become the primary public custody source.

Verify a BOP Identity Match

A release field is useful only after identity is sound. Compare the register number, full name, age, race, and sex shown by BOP. Name spelling and middle-name treatment can vary, so test known forms without adding guessed facts. A register number from the federal docket or prior correspondence is stronger than a name-only result.

Record the date of the lookup because a displayed release date can change during a First Step Act recalculation. If the locator and docket differ, do not choose the more convenient date. Report each source and contact the Bureau or appropriate record custodian for correction. The public locator is a status tool, not a certified sentence computation.

A released federal result can coexist with supervised release ordered in the judgment. That supervision is a court sentence component, not BOP physical custody. The docket and responsible federal probation authority supply that context. “Not in BOP Custody” should never be expanded into a claim that every federal obligation ended.

When the locator shows a location rather than release, confirm the label and institution. Do not substitute Leelanau outdate rules, Michigan county good time, or MDOC parole dates. Federal, state, and county systems calculate and label records under different authorities.
